A teacher gives the following problem related to 'discount' to the students for solving. "The Marked Prices (M.P.) of a shirt and sweater are Rs. 200 and Rs. 300 respectively, and the discounts on the marked prices of shirt and sweater are 20% and 12% respectively. While preparing the bill, the shopkeeper interchanged the discounts on these items by mistake. On getting the bill, Hamida noticed the mistake and paid the actual amount to the shopkeeper. How much money did Hamida pay to the shopkeeper?" What value does the teacher try to promote through this problem?

Correct Answer Honesty

Inculcation of Values among Students: Apart from home, schools are an important place where children learn values naturally through activities and their daily normal interactions with their peers. And next to the parents, the teachers have an important and effective role in the inculcation of values amongst children. The teacher must cultivate in the child the quality of sincerity of purpose in whatever the child undertakes.

The scenario has given in the question showing that the teacher wants to promote honesty through this problem. The explanation of the problem is given below:

The total discount offered on products before or after discount rates is interchanged by the shopkeeper mistakenly.

Total discount before mistake = 20% discount on M.P of shirt + 12% discount on M.P of sweater

= 20% of 200 + 12% of 300.

= 0.20 × 200 + 0.12 × 300 = 40+36

= Rs. 76

Total Market price =  M.P of shirt +  M.P of  sweater = 200 + 300 = 500

Total selling price = Total Market price - Total discount before mistake

= 500 - 76

= Rs. 424

Total discount after mistake = 12% discount on shirt + 10% discount on sweater

= 12% of 200 + 20% of 300

= 0.12 × 200 + 20 × 300 = 24+60

= Rs. 84

Total Market price =  M.P of shirt +  M.P of  sweater = 200 + 300 = 500

Total selling price = Total Market price - Total discount after mistake

= 500 - 84

= Rs. 416

Clearing shopkeer was selling items at less price than its selling price. On getting the bill, Hamida noticed the mistake and paid the actual amount to the shopkeeper which is 424.

Hence, we can conclude that by doing this, the teacher is inculcating honesty values among Hamida and all the students by this hypothetical problem.
