An ice cream parlour makes ice cream costing Rs. 100 per litre and costs Rs. 100 per litre to store it. If daily production is stored in a cylindrical container with 42 cm diameter and 16 cm height, filled to the brim. It is sold in cones of diameter 7 cm and length 12 cm with a marked price of Rs. 50. How much discount should be given to gain 25%?

An ice cream parlour makes ice cream costing Rs. 100 per litre and costs Rs. 100 per litre to store it. If daily production is stored in a cylindrical container with 42 cm diameter and 16 cm height, filled to the brim. It is sold in cones of diameter 7 cm and length 12 cm with a marked price of Rs. 50. How much discount should be given to gain 25%? Correct Answer 23%

Solution :

Given data :

Cost of production of ice cream = 100 + 100

⇒ Rs. 200/liter

Dimensions of the cylindrical storage container,

Diameter = 42 cm

Height = 16 cm

Dimensions of the cone,

Diameter = 7 cm

Height = 12 cm

M.R.P. of cone = Rs. 50

Profit % of icecream parlour = 25%

Formulae / Concepts used :

Volume of cylinder = π × r2 × h

The volume of cone = 1/3 π × r2 × h

1 liter = 1000 cm3

Selling Price = (100 – Discount %)/100

Selling Price = (100 + Profit %)/100

Discount % = × 100

Radius = Diameter/2

Calculation :

The volume of ice cream produced = π × r2 × h

⇒ 22/7 × 21 × 21 × 16

⇒ 22176 cm3

⇒ 22176/1000 litre

The cost price of ice cream = 200 × 22176\1000

⇒ 4435.2 Rs.

The selling price of Ice cream with 25% profit = 4435.2 × (5/4)

⇒ 5544 Rs.

The volume of candy = π × r2 × h

⇒ 22/7 × 7/2 × 7/2 × 12

⇒ 154 cm3

Total no. of candies that can be made from ice cream = (Total volume of ice cream)/(Volume of a cone)

⇒ 22176/154

⇒ 144

The selling price of each cone = 5544/144

⇒ Rs. 38.5

Discount % = × 100

⇒ × 100

⇒ 11.5 × 2

⇒ 23%

∴ Ice cream parlour should give a discount of 23%.
