A tailor can stitch 5 dresses in 16 days while his son can stitch 6 dresses in 20 days. In how many days can they stitch 49 dresses if they work together?  Correct Answer 80 days

Given:

A tailor can stitch 5 dresses in 16 days.

His son can stitch 6 dresses in 20 days.

Concepts used:

1 day work done by individual = Work/time

Time = Work/Efficiency

Calculation:

1 day work done by individual = Work/time

⇒ 1 day work of tailor = 5/16 = 5/16

⇒ 1 day work of tailor’s son = 6/20 = 6/20

⇒ 1 day work of tailor and his son = 5/16 + 6/20 = (25 + 24)/80 = 49/80

Time = Work/Efficiency

Time is taken by the tailor and his son in stitching 49 dresses = 49/(49/80) days = 80 days

∴ The tailor and his son together stitched 49 dresses in 80 days.
