A Policeman spots a thief 200 meters away and starts chasing him. How far would the thief have run before being caught if their speeds are 20 km/h and 16 km/h respectively. Correct Answer 800 m
Given:
The Policeman is 200 meters away from the thief
Policeman's speed is 20 km/h
Theif's speed is 16 km/h
Formula used:
Distance = Speed × Time
Calculation:
Let the distance where the Policeman will catch the thief be D.
Now distance travelled by the Policeman to catch the thief = (D + 200) meters
Distance travelled by the thief = D meters
According to the question, the Policeman can catch the thief
So, (D + 200)/{(20 × (5/18)} = D/{16 × (5/18)}
⇒ (D + 200)/20 = D/16
⇒ 800 + 4D = 5D
⇒ D = 800
∴ The thief have run before being caught is 800 meters.
Hint
x km/h = {x × (5/18)} m/s
x m/s = {x × (18/5)} km/h
