A train is moving with a speed of 18 km/h. Ali is late to board the train and starts running when the train is already 110 m ahead. He increases his speed by 2 m/s after running for 5 seconds. If he is able to catch the train after running for 1 minute, what is his original speed?
A train is moving with a speed of 18 km/h. Ali is late to board the train and starts running when the train is already 110 m ahead. He increases his speed by 2 m/s after running for 5 seconds. If he is able to catch the train after running for 1 minute, what is his original speed? Correct Answer 5 m/s
Speed of train = 18 km/hr = 18 × (5/18) = 5 m/s
Distance travelled by train in 1 minute or 60 seconds = 5 × 60 = 300 m
Let the initial speed of Ali be x m/s and speed of Ali after 5 seconds = x + 2 m/s
Distance travelled by Ali in first 5 sec = 5x
Distance travelled by Ali in next 55 sec = 55(x + 2)
Total distance travelled by Ali = distance travelled by train + headstart
∴ 55(x + 2) + 5x = 300 + 110
⇒ 55x + 110 + 5x = 410
⇒ 60x = 300
⇒ x = 5 m/s
Hence, his original speed is 5 m/s.
