A train is moving with a speed of 18 km/h. Ali is late to board the train and starts running when the train is already 110 m ahead. He increases his speed by 2 m/s after running for 5 seconds. If he is able to catch the train after running for 1 minute, what is his original speed? Correct Answer 5 m/s

Speed of train = 18 km/hr = 18 × (5/18) = 5 m/s

Distance travelled by train in 1 minute or 60 seconds = 5 × 60 = 300 m

Let the initial speed of Ali be x m/s and speed of Ali after 5 seconds = x + 2 m/s

Distance travelled by Ali in first 5 sec = 5x

Distance travelled by Ali in next 55 sec = 55(x + 2)

Total distance travelled by Ali = distance travelled by train + headstart

∴ 55(x + 2) + 5x = 300 + 110

⇒ 55x + 110 + 5x = 410

⇒ 60x = 300

⇒ x = 5 m/s

Hence, his original speed is 5 m/s.

Each question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statements are sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer. A train started from a point P towards Q and met with an accident after traveling 30 km, the speed of train got reduced after the accident and finally reached the destination 16 min late, then what is distance covered between P and Q? I. The train would have reached 21 min late had the accident happened 10 km after P. II. The train would have reached 12 min late had the accident happened 20 km before Q
