Cost of electricity consumption in a town is directly proportional to the number of units of electricity consumed after some fixed cost. The bill of Rs. 1030 is generated while consumption is 180 units. What is the fixed cost if the bill comes to Rs. 1192 when consumption is increased by 20%?

Cost of electricity consumption in a town is directly proportional to the number of units of electricity consumed after some fixed cost. The bill of Rs. 1030 is generated while consumption is 180 units. What is the fixed cost if the bill comes to Rs. 1192 when consumption is increased by 20%? Correct Answer Rs. 220

Suppose the cost per unit is Rs. x and fixed cost is Rs. y;

y + 180x = 1030     ----(1)

And,

y + (180 × 1.2)x = 1192

⇒ y + 216x = 1192     ----(2)

From both equations∶

⇒ x = 4.5

Putting the value of x in equation (1), we get

y = 1030 – 180 × 4.5 = 1030 – 810 = Rs. 220

∴ Fixed cost = Rs. 220
