Let husband’s age be ‘x’, wife’s age be ‘y’, son’s age be ‘p’ and daughter’s age be ‘q’ years respectively.

The average age of a husband, wife and their two children is 21 years,

⇒ (x + y + p + q) /4 = 21     ---- (1)

His wife is just 3 years younger than him,

⇒ x – y = 3     ---- (2)

His wife was 23 when his son was born, so at that time age of his husband is 26 years (From equation 2)

He was 34 years old when his daughter was born, so at that time his wife’s age is 31 years and age of their son will be 8 years.

∴ Average age of husband and their son is (34 + 8) /2 = 21 years
