Number of heads = 160

Number of legs = 560

Formula used:

Total leg/2 – total head = Total number of four legs animals

Calculation

Let the number of buffaloes be x

And the number of hens be y

As we know, buffaloes and hens both have 1 head

So, x + y = 160

⇒ x = 160 – y

And buffaloes have 4 legs and hens have 2 legs.

So, Total number of legs = 560

⇒ 4x + 2y = 560

⇒ 2x + y = 280

Substituting the value of head counts

⇒ 2(160 – y) + y = 280

⇒ 320 – 2y + y = 280

⇒ y = 40

∴ The number of hens in the farm is 40.
