Let the numerator and denominator be x and y respectively

⇒ x = y + 3

Fraction = x/y

⇒ (y + 3)/y

When 5 is added to the numerator and 2 is subtracted from denominator,

⇒ (y + 3 + 5)/(y – 2) = 8/3

⇒ (y + 8)/(y – 2) = 8/3

⇒ 3y + 24 = 8y – 16

⇒ 5y = 40

⇒ y = 8

Fraction = (8 + 3)/8

⇒ 11/8

Dividing the original fraction by (11/2),

⇒ (11/8)/(11/2)

⇒ (2/8)

⇒ 1/4
