Each question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statements are sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer. Find the average speed of the bus. I. The total time taken by the bus is 2/3 hours. II. The bus covers the whole journey in 4 equal parts at speeds of 20 km/h, 40 km/h, 60 km/h and 80 km/h respectively
Each question below is followed by two statements I and II. You have to determine whether the data given in the statements are sufficient for answering the question. You should use the data and your knowledge of Mathematics to choose the best possible answer. Find the average speed of the bus. I. The total time taken by the bus is 2/3 hours. II. The bus covers the whole journey in 4 equal parts at speeds of 20 km/h, 40 km/h, 60 km/h and 80 km/h respectively Correct Answer The data in statement II alone are sufficient to answer the questions, while the data in statement I alone are not sufficient to answer the question.
Let the entire distance be 4x km
From statement I:
Only time is given and no other parameter as speed or distance.
From statement II:
∵ Time = Distance/Speed
∴ Total time taken by the bus
⇒ (x/20 + x/40 + x/60 + x/80)
⇒ (12x + 6x + 4x + 3x)/240
⇒ 25x/240
⇒ 5x/48
Average Speed of the bus = 4x/(5x/48) = 4x ×48/5x = 38.4 km/h
∴ Statement II alone is sufficient to answer.
