G.P. Gooch

Father of 19th century historiography, Leopold von Ranke, has originally quoted “History has had assigned to it the task of judging the past, of instructing the present for the benefit of the ages to come… is to merely to show how things actually were.”

However, it was later cited by  G.P. Gooch in his book- History and Historians in the Nineteenth Century, second edition , pg. 74 which reads in the last part: “ is to merely show how things actually were.”
