Who defined Heuristic method as a method of teaching which involves placing of children as far as possible in the attitude of a discoverer? Correct Answer Prof. Henry Edward Armstrong

Heuristic Method
  • This method was advocated by Professor H. E. Armstrong (1888-1928).
  • The word Heuristic is derived from the Greek word ‘Heurisca’ which means ‘to find out’. It is also known as the ‘Inquiry Method’.
  • According to Prof. Henry Edward Armstrong who introduced this method for teaching science, “Heuristic method is a method of teaching which involves our placing of children as far as possible in the attitude of a discoverer”.
  • In this method, the student has to find out the answer to his/her own problem by unaided efforts. Thus, the child becomes a discoverer of knowledge by developing a spirit of inquiry.
  • The main aim of teaching by this method is not to provide many facts about Science, Mathematics, Grammar, etc., but to teach how knowledge of these can be obtained.
  • It is a Self-learning approach to learning.

The Stages of the Heuristic Method are as follows:

  • Identification of a problem
  • Experimentation and observation
  • Problem-solving
  • Evaluation
