The captain of the cricket team of 11 members is 26 years old and the wicket keeper is 3 years older than captain. If the ages of these two are excluded, the average of the remaining players is one year less than the average age of the whole team. What is the average age of the team?

The captain of the cricket team of 11 members is 26 years old and the wicket keeper is 3 years older than captain. If the ages of these two are excluded, the average of the remaining players is one year less than the average age of the whole team. What is the average age of the team? Correct Answer 23 years

Given:

Number of players = 11

Age of the captain = 26

age of the wicket-keeper = 26 + 3

Average of all players except captain and wicket-keeper = average of the whole team - 1

Concept used:

Average = sum of the elements/ total number of elements

Calculation:

Let the average age of the team be x.

Total age of captain + wicket-keeper = 26 + (26 + 3) = 55 years

Sum of age of all payers = 11 × x = 11x

Total age of all players except captain and wicket keeper = 11x - 55

Number of players except captain and wicket keeper = 11 - 2 = 9

Average of all players except captain and wicket-keeper = (11x - 55)/9

Then, (11x - 55)/9 = x - 1

⇒ x = 23

∴ The average age of the team is 23.
