Given :

Ranjeet covers 11.11% of distance with a speed of 20 km/h

40% of the remaining with a speed of 16 km/h 

50% of the remaining with a speed of 24 km/h and rest with a speed of 48 km/h

Total distance = 180 km

Formula used : 

Average speed = Total distance/Total time

Time = Distance/Speed

Calculations :

Total distance = 180 km

11.11% of 180 km = 1/9 × (180) = 20 km   (11.11% = 1/9)

Remaining distance = 180 - 20 = 160 km 

40% of the remaining = 40% of 160 = 64 km 

Remaining distance = 160 - 64 = 96 km 

50% of the remaining distance = 50% × 96 = 48 km 

Remaining distance = 96 - 48 = 48 km 

So he covers the whole journey in parts of 20 km, 64 km, 48 km and 48 km. 

Now, time to cover these distances

Time = (20/20) + (64/16) + (48/24) + (48/48)

⇒ 1 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 8 hours 

Average speed = 180/8 = 22.5 km/h 

∴ The average speed will be 22.5 km/h
