Step-up transformer is used to increase the: Correct Answer A.C. potential difference
CONCEPT:
Transformer:
- It is used to convert low voltage (or high current) to high voltage (or low current) and high voltage to low voltage.
- It works on the principle of electromagnetic induction.

There are two types of transformer:
- Step-up transformer: The transformer which increases the potential is called a step-up transformer.
- The number of turns in the secondary coil is more than that in the primary coil.
- Step-down transformer: The transformer which decreases the potential is called a step-down transformer.
- The number of turns in the secondary coil is less than that in the primary coil.
EXPLANATION:
- When an AC voltage is applied to the primary coil, the resulting current produces an alternating magnetic flux which links the secondary coil and induces an emf in it. The value of this emf depends on the number of turns in the secondary.
- Since the transformer converts the higher voltage to lower voltage and vice versa, So we can say that it can be used to obtain suitable voltage.
- Also, the transformer works with on principle of electromagnetic induction, it can be used only to obtain suitable AC voltage, not DC voltage. Therefore option 3 is correct.
