Consider the following statements about alluvial soils. 1. One of the most important and fertile soils of India they support the growth of a wide variety of crops such as rice, wheat, sugarcane, cotton, jute, potato and vegetables. 2. Alluvium are fine particles of rock materials carried in suspension and later deposited by the river in its bed and bank. 3. Alluvial soils are not formed by the deposition of silt by the rivers. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Consider the following statements about alluvial soils. 1. Alluvium are fine particles of rock materials carried in suspension and later deposited by the river in its bed and bank. 3. Alluvial soils are not formed by the deposition of silt by the rivers. Which of the statements given above is/are correct? Correct Answer 1 and 2 only
The correct answer is 1 and 2 only.
Key Points
- Alluvial soil
- This soil is found mostly in the plains of rivers such as - Satluj, Ganga, and Brahmaputra.
- The debris coming from the mountains leads to the formation of alluvial soil. The fine particles of rock material are termed alluvium and are carried in suspension and later deposited by the river in its bed and bank. The soil containing the alluvium is thus termed alluvial soil. Hence the Statement 2 is correct. and 3 is incorrect.
- Since it is formed by accumulated sediments transferred by the rivers, it is one of the most fertile soil.
- The alluvial soil contains fine particles like silt and clay and also larger particles like sand and gravel.
- The alluvial soils lack nitrogen and humus but are rich in potash and phosphoric acid.
- These soils are the best for growing crops like rice, wheat, sugarcane, cotton, jute, potato, etc. Hence the Statement 1 is correct.
- Following are the types of alluvial soil:
- Khadar Soil
- It is the new alluvial soil composed of fine silt and clay.
- It is fertile soil and found on much of the Indo-Gangetic floodplain.
- Bhabar Soil
- This soil is found across the northernmost stretch of the Indo-Gangetic plain along the Shiwalik foothills.
- It is also a form of alluvial soil and its most unique feature is its porosity. The porosity is the result of the deposition of a huge number of pebbles and rock debris across the alluvial fans.
- Bhangar Soil
- It is the old alluvial soil, full of lime nodules and is higher in sandy loam content.
- It is a less fertile soil as it is above the flood level and carries patches of alkaline efflorescences, called 'usar'.
Additional Information
- The other important soils found in India are - Black soils, Red soils, Laterite and Lateritic soils, Forest and Mountain soils, Arid and Desert soils, Saline and Alkaline soils, and Peaty and Marshy soils.
