500 litres of a mixture contains medicine and water in the ratio 23 : 27. After the addition of some medicine to it, the ratio of medicine to water in the resulting mixture becomes 10 : 9. How much quantity of medicine is added to mixture? Correct Answer 70 litres
GIVEN :
Total quantity mixture = 500 litres
Initial ratio of medicine and water = 23 : 27
Final ratio of medicine and water = 10 : 9
FORMULA USED :
If total quantity = T and the ratio of its components A and B = a : b,
Quantity of A = × T
Quantity of B = × T
CALCULATION :
Quantity of medicine = (23/50) × 500 = 230 litres
Quantity of water = (27/50) × 500 = 270 litres
Let x litres of medicine be added to the mixture
According to question:
(230 + x)/270 = 10/9
⇒ 2070 + 9x = 2700
⇒ 9x = 630
⇒ x = 630/9
⇒ x = 70
∴ 70 litres of medicine is added to the mixture.
