A child argues that Heinz shouldn’t steal the drug (medicine that can save his wife) because he will be caught and sent to jail if he does so. According to Kohlberg, which stage of moral understanding does the child fall under?
A child argues that Heinz shouldn’t steal the drug (medicine that can save his wife) because he will be caught and sent to jail if he does so. According to Kohlberg, which stage of moral understanding does the child fall under? Correct Answer The punishment and obedience orientation
Kohlberg explained the development of moral reasoning in children as well as adults. He identified six stages of moral development.
Key Points
1.Pre-conventional level-
- (i)Obedience and Punishment Orientation: a child or a person avoids or refuses to do some acts to avoid punishment by adults or some other (policemen, government, senior authorities, etc)
- (ii)Self-Interest and Reward Orientation: Children or adults follow rules to get rewards they are expecting for obedience to rules.
2.Conventional level-
- (iii)Good Boy or Good Girl Orientation: It reflects society’s views. They try to be ‘Good girl’ or ‘Good Boy’ or say they like to be rewarded as being “good”.
- (iv) Law and Order Morality: Persons understand that it is important to obey laws and social conventions because they are important in the proper functioning of society. A central idea often prescribes what is right and what is wrong.
3.Post conventional level-
- (v) Social Contract Orientation: Laws are regarded as social contracts rather than rigid rules. The thinking at this level is that those laws which are not welfare-oriented should be changed when necessary to meet the greatest good for a large number of people.
- (vi) Universal Ethical Principle Orientation: In this moral reasoning becomes based on abstract reasoning using a universal ethical principle.
Hence, according to Kohlberg, the child fall under first stage i.e. Obedience and Punishment Orientation.
