There are three categories of variation in piece part production:

1. Within-piece variation: The variations which take place within the same piece and can be thought as the roughness of a piece wherein one portion of the surface is rougher than another portion.

2. Piece-to-piece variation: This type of variation occurs among pieces produced at the same time. e.g the speed of four fans produced from a machine at the same time with the same characteristics will be different.

3.Time-to-time variation: The variations which take place between the product produced at different times of the day. Thus, a worker makes a cake in the morning would be different from that made later in the day, the efficiency of tools decreases as it is being used and the productivity and quality both change with time.
