Consider the following statements with regard to a PLL: i. The 'capture range' of a PLL primarily depends upon the slope of transition band edge of the low-pass filter. ii. The 'look range' is not affected by the slope of transition band of the low-pass filter. Which of the above statements is/are correct?

LPF = Low pass filter

VCO = Voltage control oscillate

  • For proper reconstruction of m(t), phase and frequency synchronization should be maintained between VCO and multiplier.
  • Frequency synchronization is maintained for PLL sector then said to be in ‘Lock Mode’.
  • Phase synchronization is maintained for PLL then said to be in ‘Capture Mode’.

Remember:

  • VCO is responsible for Lock Mode
  • LPF is responsible for capture Mode

Conclusion:

  • Since capture range is control by LPF & hence slope of transition band edge of LPF is important for Capture range not for Lock range

Note:

Lock range ≥ Capture range
