Which of the following is not correct about Banking Model? I. Teachers are proactive in teaching. II. It restricts critical thinking. III. First used by Paulo Freire. IV. Knowledge is kept in the depository. Correct Answer IV, I & II

The Banking Model was originally explored by Brazilian philosopher Paulo Freire in his 1968 book “Pedagogy of the Oppressed. In this ‘banking’ concept of education, the teacher is the subject of the learning process, while the pupils are mere objects.

Key PointsAccording to Freire, the main features of banking education are:-

  •  The teachers teach and the students are taught. The teachers know everything and the students know nothing.
  • The teacher thinks and the students are thought about.
  • The teacher talks and the students listen meekly.
  • The teacher disciplines and the students are disciplined. The teachers choose and enforce his choices, and the students comply.
  • The teacher acts and the students have the illusion of acting through the action of the teacher.
  • The teacher chooses the program content, and the students (who were not consulted) adapt to it.
  • The teacher confuses the authority of knowledge with his professional authority, which he sets in opposition to the freedom of the students
  • In the banking concept, education is treated and practiced as a depositing activity. In this depositing act, students become depositories and teachers the depositor. The scope of action allowed to the students, ‘extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits.’
  • By acting as a depositor, the teacher ‘domesticates’ the child into oppressor consciousness.
  • The prevalence of the banking concept within most educational systems prevents students from developing skills that make them fair-minded critical thinkers and continues to promote long-standing biases within society.
  • Freire uses the banking concept of education to discuss how education is used by those in the position of power to continue a structure that ensures their own control.
  • In Freire's work, The Pedagogy of the Oppressed, he suggests that teachers and administrators who wish to maintain power and control over their children treat instruction as if learning is like a bank.
  • In this metaphor, the teacher "deposits" information into the students, who are passive objects in the learning process. Like all good accounts, students collect the "information" and simply absorb that which is deposited. There is no questioning and there is nothing reciprocal in this process. The teacher "banks" the information in the student by depositing it in them.

Hence, we can conclude that IV, I & II are not correct about Banking Model.
