A solenoid type relay is what type of relay as far as the relay timing is concerned? Correct Answer Instantaneous relay
Types of relay:
1.) Instantaneous Relay:
- It is a relay in which there is no time delay in order to operate it.
- These relays can be operated in less than 0.1 sec.
- A solenoid type relay is an instantaneous relay whose operating time is very less.
- When the current in the solenoid crosses the pick-up value, the solenoid attracts an iron plunger which moves to close the relay contacts.
- A balance beam relay is another example of an instantaneous relay.
2.) Inverse time Relay:
- An inverse-time relay is one in which the operating time is approximately inversely proportional to the magnitude of the actuating quantity.
- The greater the magnitude of fault current, the lesser the operating time of the relay.
3.) Inverse Definite Minimum Time Relay (IDMT):
- It is a relay in which the time of operation is inversely proportional to the magnitude of fault current near pickup value and becomes substantially constant slightly above the pickup value of the relay.
4.) Definite time lag Relay:
- The definite time-lag relays are those which operate after a specific time.
- The time lag between the instant when the actuating current crosses the pickup level and the instant when relay contacts finally closed, is constant.
- This delay does not depend on the magnitude of actuating quantity.
