A businessman has some precious stones. He divides the stones among his 2 sons and his wife equally. The sons keep 1/3rd of the stones with them and divide the remaining among their wife and mother. If the businessman’s wife have 500 stones then what is the total number of the stones? Correct Answer 900
Let the stones be x
The businessman divides the stones among his 2 sons and his wife equally
⇒ The first son’s share = x/3
⇒ The second son’s share = x/3
⇒ Mother’ share = x/3 ---(1)
The sons keep 1/3rd with themselves
⇒ Stones left with each son = x/9
⇒ Stones given by one son to the mother = /2
⇒ x/9
⇒ Total stones with mother = Stones from her husband + Stones from both the sons
⇒ x/3 + x/9 + x/9
⇒ 5x/9
It is given that total number of stones that mother have = 500
5x/9 = 500
x= 900
∴ Total number of stones with businessman were 900
