The following question has two statements. Study the question and the statements and decide which of the statement(s) is necessary to answer the question. In a Cricket team, the average age of eleven players including the captain is 38 years. What is the age of the captain? I) The captain is 11 years older than the youngest player. II) The average age of 10 players other than the captain is 37.3 years. III) Leaving aside the captain and the youngest player, the average age of three groups of 3-3 players each is 35 years, 38 years and 40 years respectively. Correct Answer Either II or I and III

Total age of 11 players = (38 × 11) years = 418 years

Considering statement II,

Total age of 10 players = 37.3 × 10 = 373 years

⇒ Age of captain = 418 - 373 = 45 years

Considering statements I and III,

Age of youngest player = Captain’s age - 11

Total age of 9 players = (35 × 3) + (38 × 3) + (40 × 3) = 339

Age of all 11 players = 2(Captain’s age) - 11 + 339

⇒ 418 - 328 = 2(Captain’s age)

⇒ Captain’s age = 90/2 = 45 years

∴ The question can be answered using either statement II or statements I and III
