Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: We, who live in the present day world, are proud to call ourselves civilized. Is it because we live and dress better than our forefathers? Of course, we have the advantages of the inventions of science which our ancestors had never known. But let us search our heart and ask ourselves, "Had science solved our problems?" Frankly speaking the answer is "no". In fact, science has added to our worries. Perhaps, now, we can kill more easily and swiftly than ever before. And then we have not given up the old habit of fighting. That is why we have wars after every decade or two. If we wish to be really civilized, let us learn to live in peace. Let us achieve the brotherhood of man.Questions:a) Why do we feel proud in the present-day world?b) Why do we call ourselves civilized? c) Has science made us truly civilized? Why?d) How can we become truly civilized? e) Write a suitable title of the passage.

In Bangladesh economy with limited regulated openness in the external sector, the financial system remained free of contagion from toxic asst of the market in developed economics afflicted by the crisis. In addition, the agriculture sector of our country, as a driver of economic growth has performed relatively quite well in recent times. Our banks don’t have derivatives and they don’t have subprime mortgagees. Their investment in real estate sector has remained low. Yet there are risks and vulnerabilities in our financial sector. We need to strengthen our regulatory and supervisory systems so that these risks can be indemnified well in advance and to ensure best practices in our banks. (English to Bengal)

Read the following text and answer the questions no. 3 and 4: In the next class Ms. Choudhury tells her students the story of Lipi. The year before last, Lipi, a 14-year old girl was in class 9 in a rural school in Rangpur. Lipi is the eldest of five children-three daughters and two sons. Their father is a day labourer working on other people's land and mother is a homemaker and a part-time worker at other people's homes. The parents, particularly the mother, found it really difficult to raise five children on the small income the father could earn. Perhaps that is why Lipi's father wanted to marry her off. But Lipi was not ready to accept what her parents wanted to impose on her. She wanted to pursue her education. Her mother stood by her, though secretly. When her father arranged her marriage with Tara Mia, the only son of a farmer in the same village. She became greatly upset. Tara Mia was a widower-illiterate, but well off. His father had a few acres of arable land and was influential in the village. The marriage seemed to be inevitable. Fill in each gap with a suitable word based on the information of the text: Lipi is the eldest child of her parents. Her parents have ----(a) more children.
