What is Laryngoscopy and Nasolaryngoscopy?
Laryngoscopy and nasolaryngoscopy are two different procedures used to examine the throat and its surrounding areas. Laryngoscopy is a procedure that involves insertion of a thin, lighted tube through the mouth or nose that gives the doctor a view of the patient’s larynx and vocal cords. Nasolaryngoscopy is a similar procedure except that it uses a flexible tube that is inserted through the nose to look into the patient’s sinuses and nasal cavity.
Preparation for Laryngoscopy and Nasal Laryngoscopy
Before performing laryngoscopy and nasolaryngoscopy, the patient may be asked to refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking for two to eight hours. Additionally, the patient may be given a local anesthetic before the procedure to make the patient more comfortable. The patient may also need to wear a gown and lie down on an examination table.
Procedure for Laryngoscopy and Nasal Laryngoscopy
During laryngoscopy, the patient’s mouth is held open by the doctor while the endoscope is inserted. The doctor will then direct light and use the tiny camera on the endoscope to view the patient’s larynx and vocal cords. The larynx can then be manipulated to view any abnormalities or damage. During nasolaryngoscopy, the endoscope is inserted through the patient’s nose. A view of the nose, sinuses, and throat can then be seen.
Types of Laryngoscopy and Nasal Laryngoscopy
- Direct Laryngoscopy – This procedure uses a straight laryngoscope and is used to look at the vocal cords and larynx.
- Flexible Laryngoscopy – This procedure uses a flexible endoscope and is used to view the inside of the nasal cavity.
Risks Associated with Laryngoscopy and Nasal Laryngoscopy
The risks associated with laryngoscopy and nasolaryngoscopy are minimal but include the possibility of bleeding, infection, and sore throat. In rare instances, an allergic reaction to the medication or anesthetic given during the procedure may occur.
Why and When is Laryngoscopy and Nasal Laryngoscopy done?
Laryngoscopy and nasolaryngoscopy are used to evaluate the throat, larynx, vocal cords, nose, and sinuses. The procedures are typically done when there is a possibility of infection or tissue damage. Additionally, the procedures may be used to diagnose hoarseness, trouble swallowing, and breathing difficulties.
