Directly Letting Your Relatives Know It's Not an Option to Stay at Your Home

Having to tell your relatives to not stay at your home can be tricky. Even if you have the best intentions, you may be concerned about causing hurt feelings. Fortunately, there are a few key steps you can take to contribute to a smoother conversation.

Preparing for the Conversation

Before having a conversation with your family members, take a moment to think through what you're trying to explain:

  • Think of the main points you would like to make without getting sidetracked.
  • Consider how you would like to frame the conversation -- think of ways to remain polite and understanding.
  • If you anticipate any questions, plan an answer that conveys the main point of the conversation.

Having the Conversation

Once you have gathered your thoughts, it's time to have the conversation:

  • Let your relatives know that you love having them in your home, but that you are unable to safely accommodate visitors at this time.
  • Explain that although you would love to have them stay, you have to do what is best for the safety of your children, and restricting the amount of people coming in and out of your home is necessary.
  • Suggest nearby hotels and give them recommendations and even include a few positives about each one.
  • Offer an alternative, like staying on your couch if they find themselves in a bind, but make sure they understand you’re not allowing full-time stays.
  • Be understanding of their disappointment, but also rest assured that you are making the correct decision.
