How to Get Emergency Drinking Water from a Water Heater
In an emergency situation where clean drinking water is scarce, a water heater can be a source of potable water. Follow these steps to know how to get emergency drinking water from a water heater:
- Locate the water supply for the heater. This is usually at the back or top of the heater where the cold water supply enters the unit.
- Turn off the electric or gas power to the water heater.
- Attach a garden hose to the drain valve on the bottom of the water heater.
- Place the other end of the hose in a container for collection.
- Open the drain valve on the water heater and wait for the water to finish draining before removing the hose.
- Strain the water through cheesecloth or a coffee filter to remove any sediment or particulates.
- Let the water sit undisturbed for around 20 minutes to settle any particles. Scoop off any foam or scum that may have risen to the top and discard it.
- Boil the water for 1 minute to be safe and then let it cool before drinking it.
