Building a Garage Work Bench

Creating a functional and sturdy workbench in your garage is an excellent way to get the most out of your space. Whether you need a platform when welding, sawing, drilling, or other projects, a garage workbench can provide a solid foundation to get the job done. Here are the steps to follow for building your own workbench.

  1. Select a Location – The best spot for a workbench will be in the most accessible corner of the garage that’s still away from the common traffic path. If your garage is walk-through the best spot is right near the entrance to the living space.
  2. Choose Your Workbench Dimensions – Most work benches are between 36 and 40 inches deep, 28 to 34 inches wide and a height of close to 36 inches. Take measurements of your garage and choose the workbench size that best fits your space.
  3. Get the Right Materials – You will need a minimum of 4x4s posts, 2x4s boards, 3/4 inch plywood, and 2 ½ inch wood screws. Depending on the size of your workbench you will need at least 8 of each. You can purchase your materials at your local home improvement store.
  4. Cut the Posts – Cut the 4x4s post to the desired length for your workbench legs. You may want to get the workbench off the floor slightly, in which case, you should get posts that are 20 inches longer than the exact height of your bench. The posts should be cut with a circular saw.
  5. Assembling the Frame – Assemble the frame using 2x4s boards for the center supports. Secure them to the post with 3-inch wood screws. You may need to cut the 2x4 boards to properly fit in the frame.
  6. Attach Plywood Top – Measure and cut the 3/4-inch plywood to the appropriate size. Position the plywood on top of the frame and secure it with 2 ½ inch wood screws.
  7. Add Finishing Touches- You may also want to attach a backboard to the workbench for added support. Once all the pieces are securely assembled you can sand and stain your workbench for a professional finish.
