How to Thread a Needle and Tie a Knot
Needles and thread are essential in sewing and other needlework activities. Learning how to thread a needle and tie a knot will help you get your project underway. With these easy steps, you’ll be marking, stitching, mending, or creating in no time!
Threading the Needle:
- Start by selecting the right size and type of needle for the type of thread you’re using. Many packages of thread come with needles, so choose one that is appropriate.
- Cut a short length of thread, such as 12 to 18 inches (30 to 46 cm), and roll the thread between your fingers. This will help make the thread smoother and more pliable, allowing it to pass through the tiny eye of the needle more easily.
- Lay the threaded needle with the thread draped across your fingers, and pass it through the eye of the needle. To make it easier, slightly moisten the end of the thread with saliva.
- Gently pull the two ends of the thread until the needle is in the center. Make sure the eye is completely full of thread. Don’t pull too hard as the thread could break.
Tying the Knot:
- After threading the needle, tie a knot at the end of the thread. To do this, loop the end of the thread twice around your forefinger and use your thumb and forefinger to slide the knot off your finger and firmly onto the thread.
- Next, hold the knotted thread between your thumb and forefinger. Put the needle over the top strand and slide it back. Now slide it through the loop of thread that is resting on your forefinger.
- Gently pull the needle and thread to tighten the knot around the thread. The closer to the eye of the needle the knot is, the less it will inhibit the thread from passing through the fabric.
Now you know how to thread a needle and tie a knot! Once you’ve mastered the basics of sewing, these basics will help you complete your projects with accuracy and precision.
