Schizoid personality disorder is a mental disorder that is characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency towards a solitary or sheltered lifestyle, and emotional distance. People with schizoid personality disorder may also display a preoccupation with fantasy, detachment from social norms, and distort reality.
Identifying Schizoid Personality Disorder
There are several characteristics which indicate that someone may have schizoid personality disorder, including:
- very few or no close relationships with family, friends or romantic partners
- lack of social engagement
- social interaction is typically viewed as boring, unfulfilling, or costly
- makes little effort to cultivate close friendships
- may prefer solitary activities like reading or engaging in hobbies to social engagements
- lack of interest in activities which others typically find enjoyable
- preoccupation with fantasy, daydreaming and ideas
- inability or difficulty expressing emotions
- trouble understanding other people’s emotions
