Tips For Avoiding Singing Through Your Nose
It can be challenging to keep your singing from developing a nasal-sounding quality. Whether you are naturally prone to singing through your nose or if it is the result of vocal fatigue or bad technique, there are many ways to improve your singing and keep the tone from becoming nasal.
Instructions
- Stay relaxed. Singing through your nose might be caused by tension or poor breath support. Make sure your breathing is full and unrestricted when you practice.
- Make sure your jaw is relaxed. If it is clenched or tilted, there is a good chance you could be singing through your nose. To help your jaw relax, try humming and singing through your mouth only.
- Keep your tongue low. The tongue should always be low and out of the way when you are singing. Otherwise, your sound will travel down the back of your nose.
- Avoid singing too high in pitch. Going too high or too low can make it difficult to keep your sound from being nasal. If you are unsure if a particular note is too high for your voice, try singing it lightly.
- Focus your air toward the back of your mouth. Imagine blowing a stream of air from deep in your throat out the back of your mouth without forcing the sound through your nasal passages.
