How to Make Your Eyes Stop Hurting After Swimming

If you’ve experienced the pain of sore eyes after swimming, you know how unbearable it can be. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to quickly soothe the discomfort, protect your eyes from further irritation, and avoid a reoccurrence of the issue.

Instructions

  1. Rinse your eyes gently with clean, pure water. Use distilled water if possible, otherwise use filtered or boiled water that’s been cooled down.
  2. Make sure the water is lukewarm but not hot or cold.
  3. Gently spread open your eyelids and rinse one eye at a time.
  4. Once finished, tilt your head back and gently dry your eyes with a soft, clean towel.
  5. Afterwards, apply a cold compress to your closed eyelids for approximately 15 minutes.
  6. Use a humidifier if you’re in a particularly dry environment, or take some oral antihistamines to reduce any allergic response to chlorine or other elements.
  7. Take a break from swimming and use a chlorine remover or eye drops to help prevent any lingering irritation.
