Concept:

  • Phimosis is described as a condition in which that foreskin is too tight to be pulled back over the head or glans of the penis.
  • Congenital Phimosis- It is a tight foreskin present since birth and separation occurs naturally over time.
  • It is normal in uncircumcised children and resolves around 5-7 years of age.
  • Congenital phimosis may be treated by gentle repeated stretching of the foreskin over the head of the penis.

There are two types of phimosis

  1. Congenital Phimosis 
  2. Acquired Phimosis due to infection or scarring

Etiology:

  • Congenital defect
  • Poor hygiene
  • Genetic
  • Due to loss of skin elasticity and infrequent urination

Clinical Manifestation:

  • Inability to fully retract the foreskin over the glans penis
  • Skin irritation
  • Scarring of the foreskin and bleeding
  • Pain during urination
  • Hematuria
  • Painful erection
