Concept:
- Tuberculosis is a communicable disease where it affects the lungs by a micro organism called mycobacterium tuberculae.
- First line treatment of Tuberculosis medications are isoniazid, pyrizinamide, rifampicin, ethambutol and streptomycin are the first line drugs to cure tuberculosis.
- All these drugs are having serious side effects like headache, nausea vomiting, mental changes, muscular weakness, dizziness, and many other neurological symptoms.
- TB drugs must be continued for a prescribed period of time in order to get free from infection.
- When first line medications fail to treat serious tuberculosis infection then second line medications are used such as amikacin, kanamycin, cycloserine, etc.
- Anti-tubercular medication causing peripheral neuritis is isoniazid.
- Rifampicin - Red -> Red and Orange urine coloration.
- Isoniazid - Insane -> Neuropathy, Peripheral neuritis.
- Pyarzinamide - Hepto / Uremia -> Hepatotoxicity, Hyperuricemia and Gout.
- Ethambutol - E for eye -> Ocular side effects, Retrobulbar neuritis.
- Streptomycin - strepto = oto -> Auditory nerve damage, Ototoxicity.
