The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, known more commonly as ICF, is a classification of health and health-related domains. 

  • The ICF is a classification of health and health-related conditions for children and adults that was developed by World Health Organization (WHO) and published in 2001. The ICF framework can be used in inter-professional collaborative practice and person-centered care.

  • The ICF framework consists of two parts: Functioning and Disability and Contextual Factors. These parts are further broken down in the following manner:
    Functioning and Disability includes: Body Functions and Structures—describes actual anatomy and physiology/psychology of the human body.

  • Activity and Participation— describes the person's functional status, including communication, mobility, interpersonal interactions, self-care, learning, applying knowledge, etc.

  • As the functioning and disability of an individual occurs in a context, ICF also includes a list of environmental factors.

  • ICF is the WHO framework for measuring health and disability at both individual and population levels.

  • ICF was officially endorsed by all 191 WHO Member States in the Fifty-fourth World Health Assembly on 22 May. 

  • ICMR Act : The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest and largest medical research bodies in the world. Thus this doesn't have any declaration of the individual health. 
  • UGC act : An Act to make provision for the co-ordination and determination of standards in Universities and for that purpose, to establish a University Grants Commission. 1.
