Option 1 : Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

The social sciences encompass diverse concerns of society and include a wide range of content, drawn from the disciplines of history, geography, political science, economics, and sociology.

  • The major thrust of the social science curriculum has remained utilitarian in nature. That is to say, it puts more emphasis on developmental issues that are important but not sufficient to understand the normative dimension – issues of equality, justice, and dignity of society polity.
  • In view of this gap, there is a need to achieve a shift in focus from utilitarianism to egalitarianism that would address the normative concerns mentioned above.
  • From time immemorial, social science has been focusing on the ethos of utilitarianism i.e., its products rather than the egalitarian values provided through the analytical skills it fosters.
  • Social Science as a discipline teaches us the concept of social indifferences and the need to develop values that encourage issues of equality, justice, and dignity but due to its nonutility has been considered an important discipline.
  • Therefore, we can say that " There is an urgent need in the social sciences to shift from the ethos of  utilitarianism to that of egalitarianism."  because  " The social sciences have traditionally focused on 'developmental' issues, which are important but not sufficient to understand issues of equality, justice and, dignity."

Thus, it is concluded that Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
