Option 1 : Swan - Ganz

Concept:

  • Swan-Ganz catheterization -> It is also called right heart catheterization or pulmonary artery catheterization
  • It is the passing of a thin tube or catheter into the right side of the heart and the arteries leading to the lungs.
  • It is done to monitor the heart's function and blood flow and pressures in and around the heart.

Indications

  • Not indicated as routine pulmonary artery catheterization in high-risk cardiac and noncardiac patients
  • Indicated in patients with cardiogenic shock as a  supportive therapy
  • Indicated in patients with discordant right and left ventricular failure

  • Total parenteral nutrition -> It is indicated when there is an inadequate gastrointestinal function and contraindications to enteral nutrition.
  • It is used when the IV administered nutrition is the only source of nutrition the patient is receiving.

Catheters used for Central Venous Line:

  • Broviac -> is a central venous line which is inserted under the skin on the chest wall and into a large vein that leads to the heart. It's used in children and teens who need IV therapy for a long time.
  • Hickman -> is a central line catheter that is placed on the right side of the chest wall. A Hickman catheter is a soft, small, long, hollow tube that is placed into a vein in the chest and ends in a larger vein just above the heart.
  • Groshong -> catheters are a type of central venous catheter, which are placed under direct fluoroscopic visualization in an angiography suite. They can be tunnelled or non-tunnelled.
