Option 4 : Polarity of voltage can reverse but polarity of current cannot reverse

Quadrant operation of a rectifier:

  • A 1ϕ full-wave rectifier provides two-quadrant operation, i.e. motoring action and generating action.
  • The motoring action is achieved in the first quadrant for α < 90°
  • The generating action is achieved in the second quadrant for α > 90°.
  • In a two-quadrant converter, the polarity of voltage can be reversed for α < 90° but the polarity of current cannot be reversed.
  • During the motoring action, power flows from the source to the RLE load.
  • During the generating action, the polarity of back emf in RLE load gets reversed, so power starts flowing from load to source.
