Option 4 : (a) is process approach task and (b) is product approach task.

Writing is one of the language skills which refers to the graphical representation of speech sounds. There are different approaches to writing such as Process Approach, Product Approach, etc.

Process approach:

  • Process approach to writing models the writing process rather than the written product. It involves the active participation of learners.
  • It enables learners to learn how to write as it is a writing approach in which learners undergo different stages of writing for developing a good write-up.
  • It focuses on the steps involved in creating a unique/creative piece of writing and emphasizes revising, editing, and producing a text before coming up with the final text.
  • Stages involved in the process approach to writing are Brainstorming, Outlining, Drafting, Revising, Proof-reading, and Writing the final draft.
  • For example,  Look around the room you are in now. With your friends observe, gather information-objects, people, and actions. Jot down ideas, points, develop an outline, write the draft, edit it and write the final draft. Give a title to your paragraph.

Product approach:

  • Product approach is a writing approach that focuses on the final product of the writing task in which students imitate a writing model text.
  • It views learners’ composition as the visible proof of their knowledge of the rules of writing. The teachers in the product approach ensure the accuracy of usage of spelling, punctuation and, syntax.
  • It encourages learners to emulate the seemingly correct model of writing in terms of appropriate vocabulary and syntactic choices. Therefore, emphasis is paid to learning appropriate language structures at the expense of individual style.
  • For example, Write a paragraph of 200 words on 'Autobiography of the Snake'.

Hence, it could be concluded that (a) is process approach task and (b) is product approach task.
