Option 2 : Cognition and Emotions
Cognition and emotions are interrelated and both effects each other.
- Cognition is a term referring to the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension. These cognitive processes include thinking, knowing, remembering, judging, and problem-solving.
- Emotion is an affective state of consciousness in which joy, sorrow, fear, hate, or the like, is experienced, as distinguished from cognitive and volitional states of consciousness. Emotion can be positive or negative and it affects our cognition in that way.
- In the above-mentioned statement, the cognition and emotions relationship is highlighted because covid-19 affected students' mental health and cognition, where negative emotions were dominant and it affected students' performance.
- Cognition and Emotion interact to determine ongoing behaviors. Our cognition, i.e. our perceptions, memories, interpretations are essential ingredients of emotions. So the process of emotion starts with cognition.
- If pressures due to stress continue, one may suffer from mental overload. This suffering from a high level of stress can rapidly cause individuals to lose their ability to make a sound decision.
