Option 1 : Addition with regrouping

Misconception refers to the gap in children's knowledge. If they're not addressed properly, they can recur and build over time.

The process of making groups of 10s while adding or subtracting two-digit numbers is known as regrouping. Carrying and borrowing are two terms commonly used for this.

  • In the above question, the children will start adding the number in the one's column first (0+5). By adding these numbers the answer they get is 5.
  • Then, they will add the numbers in the tens column (6+5) and the answer they get is 11. However, they cannot place the 11 underneath the tens column, because they can only place one digit per column.
  • Then, by regrouping they can change 11 into 1 tens + 1.
  • To do this, they should place the number 1 in the tens column and one above the hundreds column. This indicates that there are 1 ten and one additional 10. After regrouping, they will add the hundreds column (3+1). Then, the answer will be 415.
  •  It means that the children are having problems with the concept of regrouping.

Hence, we conclude that revisiting the concept of addition with regrouping teachers can best remediate the misconception.
