  • India is endowed with fairly abundant resources of iron ore and has the largest reserve of iron ore in Asia.
  • The two main types of ore found in India are hematite and magnetite. Hence Option 1 is correct.
  • The iron ore mines occur in close proximity to the coal fields in the northeastern plateau region.
  • About 95% of the total reserves of iron ore are located in the States of Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
  • Haematite
    • Reddish; best quality; 70 per cent metallic content.
    • Found in Dharwad and Cuddapah rock systems of peninsular India.
    • 80 per cent of haematite reserves are in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
    • In the western section, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa have this kind of ore.
  • Magnetite

    • Dharwad and Cuddapah systems.
    • Have Magnetic quality.
    • Found in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
  • Limonite
    • Inferior ores; yellowish in colour; 40 to 60% iron metal.
    • Damuda series in Raniganj coal field, Garhwal in Uttarakhand, Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh and Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Siderite
    • ‘Iron carbonate’; inferior quality; less than 40 per cent iron.
    • Contains many impurities, and mining is not economically variable.
