Option 1 : Audio lingual Method
English is a second language, irrespective of its standard of teaching and availability of English in the ambiance and exposure and access to the language.
- Methods of language teaching have been influenced by a variety of extant social, political, and psychological factors. There are several methods of English language teaching and the Audio Lingual Method is one of them.
- Audio Lingual Method was one of the methods which were based on the Behaviorist - Structuralist Paradigm. This method focused on spoken language and pronunciation taught through drills as well as dialogue practice in small groups of motivated learners and native language teachers.
- Audio Lingual Method relied heavily on drills and practice to form habits as this method stressed the need for oral drilling, pronunciation, and “mastery of the formal properties of language”, which implies good grammatical habits or ‘structure’.
- Dialogues were the main aspect of the audio-lingual approach as they provided the learners an opportunity to mimic/imitate, practice, and memorize bits of language considered to be relevant to their situations.
Hence, it is clear that the Audio Lingual Method emphasizes more on spoken than written language.
Hint
- Grammar-Translation Method: In this method, the learner first learns grammatical rules and then applies those rules in translating sentences from the target language in the mother tongue. It focuses on writing skills.
- Deductive method is based on deduction. At first, the grammar rules are given and then students are asked to engage with them through the study and manipulation of examples.
-
Structural Approach is a language tool that helps the learner to master the structure or pattern of sentences. It improves the fundamental skill of language learning and corrects learners' speech habits.
