Option 4 : English as a medium of instruction from Foundational Stage of schooling.

National Education Policy is an ambitious and futuristic policy that ensures opportunities for children to hone their talents by fixing the lacunae in the education system.

  • NEP 2020 is the third education policy in the history of independent India after the policy of 1968 and the second policy of 1986.
  • The main goal of the school education regulatory system is to improve educational outcomes so that children can learn to implement the acquired knowledge and skills in their practical life.

Recommendation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020:

  • Study of classical language as an additional option at the secondary stage as the importance, relevance, and beauty of the classical languages and literature of India cannot be overlooked. India has extremely rich literature in other classical languages, including classical Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia.
  • Study of foreign language as an additional option at the secondary stage as in addition to high-quality offerings in Indian languages and English, foreign languages, such as Korean, Japanese, Thai, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian, will also be offered at the secondary level, for students to learn about the cultures of the world and to enrich their global knowledge and mobility according to their own interests and aspirations.
  • Mother tongue/Home language as a medium of instruction up to class V and possibly up to class VIII. Flexible implementation of three language formulas as the three languages learned by children will be the choices of states, regions, and of course, the students themselves, so long as at least two of the three languages are native to India.

Thus, it is clear that English as a medium of instruction from the Foundational Stage of schooling is NOT true of language education in the National Education Policy 2020.
