Option 1 : Protest of farmers against oil and natural gas exploration activities.

Farmers of Kadiramangalam in Thanjavur district protested against the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) exploration activities in the village in 2017.

The ONGC Project:

  • Three oil wells have been sunk in the village and hydrocarbon supplies have been pumped out since 2004.
  • The pumped crude oil and natural gas pass through underground pipelines laid at a depth of six feet to Kuttalam, which are five kilometers away.
  • The ONGC had already gone over 400 feet digging the wells.
  • The suggestion was that the ONGC should exploit methane and shale gas from coal beds more closely.

Reasons for the Protest:

  • Drinking water has turned brownish-yellow in the village with a high degree of exposure polluting particles.
  • The villagers feared that the discovery of oil would deplete the groundwater table and also pollute the quantum available.
  • ONGC exploration representatives did not answer questions from the people
  • A pipeline exploded near one of the oil wells, causing panic among the citizens in farmers ' fields
  • When villagers saw oil pipe leakage, Farmers want to stop the ONGC work near the Cauvery region which is a fertile land.
  • They feared that leakage in the future can adversely impact agriculture.
  • Thus this protest is to stop the ONGC's oil and natural gas exploration project.

In February 2020, Tamil Nadu Government Passed The Tamil Nadu Protected Agricultural Zone Development Act 2020 which prevents new hydrocarbon projects in the region.

NOTE:

Protest of Farmers against Suicide in rural areas:

  • In 2017, the Tamil Nadu government declared 32 districts as drought-hit due to fewer monsoon rains and farmers were in distress.
  • The suicide of farmers triggers the protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. They protested with a list of demands to alleviate their plight including loan waivers.

Protest of Women against Liquor Shops:

  • The protest was against the liquor shops flouting rule set by the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court of India had passed a judgment prohibiting shops, bars, and restaurants from selling liquor on state and national highways.

Protest of Laborers against Child Exploitation:

  • The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation Amendment) Act, 2016 had decreased the number of hazardous work from 83 to 3.Children were allowed to work in the family business.
  • This had drawn criticism from activists and even from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
  • In 2017, this acted was amended and fixed. Children were allowed to assist in the family business for three hours after school and other conditions were laid out as well.

Hence, from the above points, we can clearly infer that the protest that took place in Kathirmangalam in Thanjavur District is regarding the protest of farmers against oil and natural gas exploration activities.
