Option 4 : speaks the same language
Speech Community: The terms 'speech community refers to a group of individuals who share, certain linguistic features, and who might be said to speak the same language (or dialect or variety). Each language defines a speech community: the whole set of people who communicate with each other, either directly or indirectly, via the common language. The three major components of the speech community are-
- a common language
- frequent interaction and communication
- distinguishable from other communities/groups.
The general equation that seems to be operative is "one language - one community ".
| Uses different languages | Multilingual |
| Connects by virtue of a link language | Foreign Language |
| Speaks different dialects | Socio-Linguistics |
Hence, we can conclude that a speech community refers to a community that speaks the same language.
