The work done during compression of air is given by

Polytropic Process is represented by

- n = 0 ⇒ P = C ⇒ Constant Pressure Process (Isobaric Process)
- n = 1 ⇒ PV = C ⇒ Constant Temperature Process (Isothermal process)
- n = γ ⇒ PVγ = C ⇒ Adiabatic Process
- n = ∞ ⇒ V = C ⇒ Constant Volume Process (Isochoric process)

From the figure, it is clearly evident that the area under the curve (work done) is minimum for isothermal compression and maximum for isentropic compression.
∴ Isothermal compression is the energy-efficient process for compression of air.
