- Saakshar Bharat is a government of India initiative launched by thenPrime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh to create a literate society through a variety of teaching learning programmes for non-literate and neo-literate of 15 years and above.
- It was launched on 8 September 2009 as a centrally sponsored scheme.
- The scheme seeks to reduce the literacy gap between the males and females, and so, it is directed towards women in particular. It aims to target 60 million women across the country.
- The scheme also considers the illiteracy in disadvantages group and it aims to target 410 districts in 27 states/UTs.
- The scheme targets 70 million people from the age of 15 years and beyond to improve literacy ration of India.
- It also aims at providing opportunity to continue education to those who have left due to financial and other constraints and to impart skill-based education.
- The scheme is anchored with Panchayati Raj institutions and Local Self-Governments to facilitate grass-root level penetration of the education.
