Awadh was established as an imperial province or Subahs by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century.
In 1722, it also became a hereditary tributary polity, with Saadat Ali Khan as its first Subadar Nawab and Ayodhya as its initial capital.
Awadh gradually became an independent kingdom when the powers of the Mughals vanished.
